The POF-830 Optical to Co-axial digital audio converter transforms a TOSlink optical digital audio output to a more usable
Co-axial (S/PDIF) signal. The most frequent use of this is for surround sound in home cinema situations using Sky as the source.
With the exception of the new SkyHD, which has HDMI output, the only way to listen to Dolby Digital surround sound tracks
on films broadcast on Sky is via the TOSlink Optical digital audio output. Many surround sound ampfiers, however, do not
accept optical inputs, requiring conversion to digital coaxial.
Likewise when transmitting digital audio over longer distances using Category 5e cable, you will need to convert to
digital coaxial audio, so that you can use MuxLab digital audio baluns.
Computer games also often output in optical digital audio.
