The HNS 19" rack with telephone host panel allows you to add phone distribution to an existing 19" rack system.
The 1u rack has potential for 6 blocks of 4 ports per block. It comes complete with a 4 port voice host block, BT launch lead
(for connecting to your BT master socket) and
4 off 300mm green patch leads. The 4 port voice host block - labelled "TELEPHONE LINE" in the pictures - is specially configured on the rear when it is manufactured, to provide 4 extensions from one BT line
(the maximum REN number that the BT network can provide being 4).
How does it work?
This rack uses the same 4 port system as the standard residential
HNS HomeCabling patch panel
and
HNS HomeCabling Mini patch panel. This means that you can add individual 4 port global upgrade blocks
to give you the required number of telephone outlets. For example if you have say 8 phone points in your house but only want to have 4 of these actually live
and connected to a phone, then you would just require 2 off 4 port global upgrade blocks. These are labelled "TELEPHONES" in the pictures.
Each wall mounted phone outlet would be connected to the rear of
one of the ports. To make a particular outlet active, you patch between a voice host port and the required port.
Four connected pieces of equipment at any one time are often enough but remember that if you have a fax or PC modem connected to an outlet, in addition to
a phone, using a 2 way spitter, then this outlet will count as at least two REN.
You can have more devices connected by increasing the maximum REN for your system. Using a REN amplifier you can boost the total REN for your system to 11.
(The REN amplifier simply plugs in line in the master socket, and the lead from the patch panel then goes into the REN amp. Mains power is required.)
This allows you to add extra voice host blocks to increase the number of ports in groups of 4 ie 4, 8, 12 and patch these to outlets using patch leads
in the normal way. The extra 4 port voice host block is daisy-chained to the first block on the rear.
If you require a second incoming line to be made available to the system, you require a second voice host expansion kit. This includes the 4 port voice host
block, the BT launch lead and 4 off 300mm green patch leads.
Other uses
In addition to telephone distribution this 1u rack can also be used for creating a LAN (Local Area Network) by using the 4 port patchable global upgrade blocks
for connecting to wall mounted data outlets rather than phone outlets, labelled "DATA" in the pictures. The network is completed using a network
switching hub or broadband router if the LAN
is to connect to the Internet. The photo at the top of the page shows the blanked ports labelled for phone, data and CCTV.
