S-Video socket

S-Video Y/C

Term used to describe systems that output or transmit separate "Y" Luma (Black & White) From "C" Chroma (colour) signals.

The SCART connection which is used in Europe can carry an S-video signal, although most people associate S-video with the 4-pin DIN connection that became popular on S-VHS video recorders and camcorders.

S-Video is a huge improvement over composite video, but RGB is better especially for digital TV. Also S-Video cannot carry component Progressive Scan for DVD and High Definition TV (HDTV).

One useful feature of S-Video is the length of cable run that is possible (up to 20m) without resorting to video baluns.

NB: Separate connections are required for audio.
