As standard the Panasonic D8 series of High Definition (and standard definition) plasma panels come with a 15 pin D-sub VGA style of input to allow
connection with PCs or other devices that can output RGBHV component video.
A special feature of the Panasonic D8 series, however, is the use of Multi-function slots. These allow you to use a variety of Panasonic video
terminal boards,
available as options, which means that you can customise the unit to meet your specific needs.
The 42", 50" and 65" Panasonic D8 displays have 3 video slots; the 37" standard definition D8 has 2. For a guide to fitting video boards into earlier Panasonic D6 (commercial "system route" plasma) and
W6 (consumer plasma) click for a PDF here.(100Kb)
DVI-D video board - TY42TM6D
The DVI-D video board allows you to input digital sources, such as the
Neuston Media Centre, the
Elonex Artisan Media Centre, and the Mac Mini
compact computer,
directly into the plasma display. By avoiding the conversion from digital to analogue and then back again on the plasma the image
remains at its original crystal clear quality.
HDMI video board - TY-FB8HM
HDMI is becoming the digital replacement for SCART in its functionality,
transmitting both digital video and digital audio. Athough not yet as common on equipment as DVI, AV amplifiers and receivers are expected
to become available with HDMI providing complete digital pathways to make the most of digital recordings.
Equipment with DVI output can be connected to HDMI, by the use of an adaptor, because they use the same encoding.
NB: This board is NOT suitable for the D7 series plasma display.
Component/Composite video board - TY-42TM6YB
This board, which occupies slots 2 and 3, allows you to connect a wide range of input sources from composite video, S-Video and component video to RGB on BNC
(not SCART). The component and composite connections are BNC and require BNC plug to phono socket
adaptors if your AV interconnect is RCA phono. The Component
video connections can be selected as either Y,Pb,Pr on three BNC or
RGBHV on five BNC, via the set-up menu.
Stereo audio input is on phono connections. This board also has a composite video out connection for a second monitor.
Composite Video board - TY-42TM6BB
This lets you connect S-video and composite video equipment such as a VCR or video camera, directly to the plasma screen.
The component and composite connections are BNC and require BNC plug to phono socket.
adaptors if your AV interconnect is RCA phono. This board also supports left and right audio input (suitable if you have directly
connected speakers).
Component video board - TY-42TM6AB
This lets you connect component video equipment such as a VCR or SkyHD box, directly to the plasma screen.
The component connections are BNC and require BNC plug to phono socket.
adaptors if your AV interconnect is RCA phono. This board also supports left and right audio input (suitable if you have directly
connected speakers).
Video Balun receiver board (Twisted pair cable receiver) - KE0101CRBW
This video balun receiver board works together with its video balun transmitter (Twisted pair cable transmitter - Part number -
KE0202CT2W) to allow you
to use standard Category 5e cable, as used for home networking, to transmit video, audio and the plasma control signal.
This system can handle RGB, component or composite video from a DVD player or PC into the transmitter. NB: for composite video
you will need the Composite Video board TY-42M6YB or TY-42TM6BB also fitted into a multi-funtion slot.
Alternative video balun systems, not using the TY-FB7WPU video board, but allowing you to transmit VGA or S-Video or Composite Video
over Cat5e cable are also available. For details click here.
Other terminal boards
There are a number of other specialist video boards eg RGB active through terminal board for multi-screen displays, broadcast quality
Serial Digital Interface (SDI) and High Definition SDI (HDSDI) video boards, and composite and component video boards with BNC connections.
